Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Ibelieveinquality Reviews!
Here's an idea...

Here's an idea for a new reviewing system I plan to use on BAB!

Ibelieveinquality book reviews!

I love reviewing and discussing books. It is something I could do for hours with friends and family and even people who I don’t even know. Once, someone I met at my mom’s chiropractic appointment and I talked for a long time about The Inheritance Cycle. We didn’t even know each other’s names.

However, I hardly ever meet people who love to read and talk as much as I do. Most people just enjoy a book. They don’t dwell on and dissect and ponder and dream about the books for years and years even after they’ve read it.

BUT, I know that all you Chatterboxers love books as much as I do, so I am starting a set of reviews on some amazing books that I hope will prompt discussion.

First off, I do believe in spoilers.

No, I don’t mean giving away major plot twists, I’d never do that! ;)

However, I like to know what I’ll be reading. I want to know the characters a little bit before I delve into the story, and I want to know if the plot will ever pick up enough before I put a book down after the first page. I will warn you before giving any sort of spoilers, but I still believe in having more than a basic synopsis.

Here is what I plan to give in my reviews:

  1. A plot synopsis
  2. A detailed description of some of the characters I thought to be very well developed, including some parts of the story that shaped their characters. I will try not to give away too much.
  3. Age ratings based off of the Hamilton Scale, which is explained on my Princess Mononoke thread.

4. What makes this book special?

5. Similar books/lower age-rating alternatives.

If this turns out to be a great way to review, than I will do it with movies and TV shows as well! If you want to request something you are thinking about reading, chances are, I’ve already read it or one of my bookish pals has, so go ahead and request it!

Admins, I use the website Common Sense Media to get age ratings and other reviews. Is it all right if I mention that website and include some things from their reviews? I will definitely give them credit.

No, Rosebud. Please just write the reviews all yourself and include your own recommended age range. Thank you for asking.

Can you do The Lunar Chronicles? I've had a couple CBer recently on it, and I wanna read it (sounds really good) but I'm not quite sure about it. Does it have anything inappropriate/very much romance etc.? Thanks!

Lunar Chronicles is something I have not read, but heard a lot about. What I've heard is that it's pretty violent but doesn't have that much romance. From different reviews I've read/people I've talked to, I'd say about 12 pluss-ish, but I don't know for sure. Maybe that's something I can read over the summer! I'm already writing a review for The Secret Zoo.

I consumed the Lunar Chronicles voraciously. I would suggest the series to anyone looking for a thick book filled with adventure, plot twists, awesomely tech-y sci-fi, and strong female protagonists. My only complaint about the books is that it is quite bloody (people fight/get killed/are punished with violence a lot). There is some kissing that gets a little repetitive, and almost every main character has a boyfriend or girlfriend. In my opinion, and from my limited memory of books I read over the summer, the romance is appropriate, as Rosebud said, for ages 12 and up. Regardless, don't read it if romance makes you squirm. Also don't read if blood makes you squirm, or if vaguely disturbing ideas about technology make you squirm. Definitely read it if you want a new favorite series!

I hope this helped, and I apologize to Rosebud for taking over her thread!

Thanks, it did! I'll ask my mom about the series, and hopefully I can read it! :D

Do "Overturned" by Lamar Giles!  I'm reading it right now and it's really good!

if you're looking for more options, you might also do The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer.
