Pride and Prejudice
So, this is...

So, this is where we all talk about Pride and Prejudice! I know I'm not the only enthusiast on here. Anything you have to say on the subject is welcome-- it should spark some form of conversation.

I'm not an enthusiast, exactly, but I do now a bit about the book.

I hate Mr. Darcy.

I love Pride and Prejudice!! Austen really makes you like the nice characters and dislike the awful ones-- I love how she plays up the awkwardness. Have you ever seen the BBC televesion series of P&P? It captures the book amazingly.

Yeeees! Pride and Predjudice for the wiiin! Only one of my favorite books of ALL TIME! I absolutely adore it! The snark in it is beautiful and all the characters are just so perfect. It's the sort of book you can read 5,000 times and discover something new every time you read it. My mom and I are actually rewatching the BBC mini-series today, what a coincidence. Jennifer Ehle is great as Elizabeth, and Colin Firth as Darcy is on point! I really hate the 2005 version of P&P though (please don't hate me please don't hate me). I think it changes to much. Also Pride and Predjudice and Zombies? Who came up with the atrocity? It is a crime, I say, a crime!

Pepper Star, you hate Mr. Darcy? *dramatic gasp* How is this possible?! I do not understand! *storms out of room* *comes back because has no where to go* How darest thou! It is the great Mr. Darcy! (Imayormaynothavetheteansiesttinyestcrushonhim) What? *cough* I may or may not have the tensiest tinyest crush on him *cough* Okay, maybe more than the tensiest tinyest... But what? He's MR. DARCY for goodness' sake!

Also, can someone drag Mirax over here?

He seems pretty stuck up for the first half of the book. I like Mr. Bingley better.

He is rather. . . prideful? Eh? Eh? Sorry. I love Mr Darcy, because a girl's got to dream of a tall, dark, handsome, and disgustingly rich stranger to unwittingly fall in love with her, but I admit that in real life I'd probably prefer a Mr Bingley, who's sweet and consistent, rather than dramatic and proud. (Still in love with Mr Darcy though. Nothing's going to change that. XD)

But Darcy isn't dramatic. And he doesn't fall in love unwittingly. He's actually a very interesting and complicated person. The "In vain I have struggled, it will not do" speech reveals a lot about his character. He sees that Mrs. Bennet is a frivolous fortune-hunter, and he believes Jane to be the same, as she is so reticent and "smiles too much." And he has no respect for the Bennet family. But he loves Elizabeth anyway-- which is why he's surprised at himself.

The relationship between the two main-interest characters is actually rather intellectual from the start-- Darcy recognizes that Elizabeth is on his mental level. He's bored with everyone else in the world-- they're all silly or low, and fawning and obsequious. He likes that she's witty and not overly respectful when she speaks to him-- he likes that she's a puzzle. You know what, I'm just going to stop explaining things badly, and ask you to do this: Google "16 personalities". When you get the results, select the one that says "Personality types." Then scroll down and click on the avatar that says "Architect." Then just read as much of the article as you feel like-- it's divided into sections-- and it explains Fitzwilliam Darcy very well.

I guess I was referring to how the character is viewed in popular culture. Darcy has kind of created the stereotype of the Romantic hero, even if he is not actually that stereotype. And while Darcy did not intend it this way, showing up and proposing (Especially in the way he did) after outwardly showing her only disdain does seem a tad bit dramatic. But you are right, Darcy is a much more complex than I gave him credit for. I do love the complexities of the relationship between Darcy and Lizzie. I still think I might prefer a Bingley in real life, but Darcy is an amazing character.

Ahhhhhh! I love the 1995 Pride and Prejudice! Mr. Darcy is awesome and so is Lizzie! Did you know that the actor of Lydia had her own TV show when she is older! It was called Larkrise to Candleford. It is so great. My mom and I watched the whole 4 seasons THREE TIMES in the last month! Pride and Prejudice is wonderfully created and the actors are fantastic!

Oh, oh oh! MR COLLINS! We MUST talk about him. Isnt he the squirmiest person you have EVER seen? He's so... yuck! I mean that hand wave... my friend's brothers do it all the time. It's so horrible. So anyone who wants to rant about him....do it. Just do it.

Hey, Pepperstar! Have you read the entire book? It's very good. I understand your not liking Mr. Darcy-- he's the heartthrob of English Literature, but if most of his fans were actually to meet him, I don't think they'd like him very much.

I LOVE the 1995 BBC miniseries! Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are perfect for their parts-- I like that Ehle isn't so thin. And that her Lizzy is spirited and independent, but also grounded and mature-- something Keira Knightley's "Liz" does not portray. If anyone is familiar with 16Personalities, it makes this book a lot more fun. just knowing that Darcy is the Architect (INTJ) type, and that Elizabeth is the Protagonist (ENFJ).

Booksy Owl: I haven't actually seen the 2005 film, but I've watched selected scenes, and they're rather dreadful. "Liz" is too affected and immature and even too thin. Personally, I don't think Knightley is a very good actress. I mean, she's obviously much better than I am, but she never seems to look or act much like the character she's portraying-- she just looks like a fashion model, moving about in her costume and always holding her face so as to look as attractive as possible. And then whoever plays Darcy is all moody and Byronic, and all, all wrong.

Oh, Mr. Collins! XD He's ridiculous to the point of absurdity untarnished. I will say that the Collins in the 2005 film brings something right to the character-- he's not so revolting, and more genuinely caught up with himself and his prideful humiliation. But the BBC Collins is about right for the show-- his dynamic goes well with the other actors.

In defence of the 2005 version, one must admit that you can't do as much with movie format. The directors and producers and everybody don't have as much screen-time to work with. Also, they were trying to achieve something different from what the BBC folk were. And, given the reception of the film, it seems they achieved their goal.

I can definitely see Darcy as an INTJ, and it's perfect. Lizzy, however? I'd disagree with you, and say that she's INFJ. I think she's just a lot mre introverted. However, it may just be that I want to have the same personality type as Elizabeth.

I didn't actually place Lizzy as an ENFJ-- the 16Personality people did. I was a bit surprised, but it makes sense, when you stop and think about it-- the way she behaves. She's very introsepctive, true-- but that has little to do with the Mind (I or E) trait. The ENFJ is actually known for introspection. She isn't drained by her interaction with people, she thrives on it. She's also charismatic and convincing, another ENFJ trait. Try reading the ENFJ (Protagonist) section through, and then see what you think.

But-- hey! If she isn't one of our personality types, at least she's in our Role group, what?
