Who else is
Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Who else is excited for the new book from Philip Pullman? I heard about it on the radio this morning and FREAKED. OUT. And started talking back to the radio like we were having a conversation, but that's another story... anyway, it's set in the same universe as His Dark Materials. Which is a lot of different universes, so I'm guessing the original one that Lyra is from. It's set before The Golden Compass, while Lyra is still a baby. Appearently it features an adult side character from that book, but Philip isn't saying who.
Do you realize how amazing this is? For seventeen years Pullman hasn't written another book for His Dark Materials. Whenever a fan or reporter would ask him how his book was coming along, he'd always say the same thing: "Three pages longer than it was yesterday."
It's coming out in October and I'm SO excited!

Okay, it's time to grab everyone's hands and jump around in a circle while screaming.

I had been reading that series for a while when I went on a camping trip with my dad, in the middle of a really tough month schoolwise. I was exhausted and had been staying up so late to get everything done each day, so that two and a half day stretch was like an oasis in the middle of the storm. We made a fire and set up the tent. It grew dark outside, and the stars came out. Soon my dad went to bed, and I was left sitting there, looking at the vast expanse of stars, the glowing embers in the fire pit in front of me. And I took out my reading light and started reading The Amber Spyglass, or what was left of it. It was one of the best book-reading experiences I have ever had. It was quiet and not too cold. The stars were beautiful and numerous, and I could even spot a few constellations I remembered from a fourth grade Astronomy class. Since I live near Atlanta, I don't really see that many stars at night (I hate light pollution). I went with Lyra and Will through the World of the Dead and it was almost creepy to be sitting outside at night alone, but not. It was so peaceful. And when I finished it I just sat there, reliving it, striving to think of ways Will and Lyra could have stayed together, and wondering if what they had was even true love, and thinking of alternate worlds that could be opened with a knife, and looking at the stars. Then I went into the tent and fell asleep.
So yeah. That's partly why I love those books.

Fun (sort of I don't know how fun) fact: This is the only series that has actually gotten me to cry when a character dies. It was when (Spoiler Alert!!!!) Lee Scoresby died. It was so sad, the way Hester let one tear slip, how they were hiding behind that rock and used up every bullet to let Will's dad escape...

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh yes. That made me cry, too. :( He was such a good character. Like a father-figure for Lyra. But- maybe he'll show up in the new one?? I hope I hope I hope I HOPE!
