Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Dropping in to have a chat with you guys about duos in literature - romances, friendships, enemy...ships, anything in between!
I finished The Great Gatsby last Tuesday or so, and one of the character relationships within it touched me to a point that I had to go and watch two movies based on the book, mostly to see them interact. And I really hate movies. (I mean, the book in general touched me, of course, but. Yeah.)
So, what are some characters you know/love that are great individually, but even better as a pair? I called them 'literary' in the title, but if you want to bring in pairs from other works of fiction, that's great too! Like I said, they can be couples, or friends, or foils, or anything in between, or friends that you ship, or a couple you think would be better as friends... you get the point.
Anyway, time for me to ramble about friendship! And romance! (vague spoilers ahead.)
- Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby: The Great Gatsby. Kind of why I made this thread. I'm not even sure why I attached myself to them so thoroughly, but I think (the book is on its way to becoming a hundred years old, but just in case we want to avoid spoilers) Nick's reaction to the end of the book, and his generalized narration throughout, is kind of what made me feel most acutely the unfairness and tragedy that Fitzgerald communicated, because I get really really attached to character relationships.
- Glinda and Elphaba: Wicked. Augghhhh is all I can say. Just like with the above two, the ending was made all the more tragic to me by the fact that there was someone left grieving; the estrangement between them, but also the very fact of their closeness means A Whole Dang Lot to me.
- Polly and Maladict: Monstrous Regiment. This one's so obscure that I don't believe anyone will know it, but let me just say that Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett made all Sweet Polly Oliver (girl dresses up as a boy to fight in the army) stories thereafter only come in second place after this one, and these two were a big part of the reason why. They're so snarky, but also it's very clear that they care about each other a lot. Also, that ending.
- Kaede and Taisin: Huntress. MALINDA LO, WHY MUST YOU CRUSH MY DREAMS?
- Crowley and Aziraphale, Good Omens: Yes. Y e s . And these guys actually get a happy ending, what do you know? But anyway, the idea of a partnership between the two is hilarious and touching and wonderfully human, which can actually describe Good Omens as a whole.
- Courfeyrac and Marius, Les Miserables: I'm getting an uncomfortable feeling that I'm way too into pairs like this where one person dies.
- Joly and Bossuet, Les Miserables: Or both of them.
- Enjolras and Feuilly, Les Miserables; Enjolras and Grantaire, Les Miserables; Bahorel and Jean Prouvaire, Les Miserables. Or both of them.
- Eponine and Cosette, Les Miserables - Not a friendship or a romance, not really an enemy-ship, but certainly a very interesting dynamic that I wish Hugo had explored more. Oh well, that's what fanfiction's for!
- Moving on from Les Mis: You can't really talk about literary duos without bringing up Holmes and Watson, because they're definitive. Therefore: Holmes and Watson. From the book and the period-piece adaptions, not the new BBC one.
- Shakespseare created two pairs I have a huge amount of feelings about; Beatrice and Benedick are one, because banter! Deception! The best romantic comedy ever created! The others, and you guys are going to laugh at me, are Romeo and Juliet. I know, I know, it's cool these days to be like "Romeo and Juliet were stupid teenagers" but like... it was their families' fault? Kids should be allowed to fall in love without everything that happened to them happening. So I'm not so much really into the pairing as I am very sad about what befell them. A lot.
- Just kidding, there's a third Shakespearaean one: Hamlet and Horatio. Man.
- Howl and Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle is still one of my favorite romances ever. The book, mind you - the movie's beautiful, but the book is this incredle, unique work of literature that I just. Wow. Wow.
Anyway, I'm sure there are a lot more, but honestly I'm making this thread so as to put off studying for the AP World exam (which is on Thursday. Yikes.) A whole lot was omitted, but this is because I was focusing on duos - there are a whole lot of trios and collectives that I adore as well, but that is probably a thread for another day.
What do you guys think of my choices, and what are yours?

This is an actual literary device called FOIL. Search it!
Also, I think The Old Families and The Mage from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is one example.
(May 7, 2016 - 11:18 pm)
TOP!!!
(May 8, 2016 - 12:59 pm)
Frazel! EEEEE!
Frank Zhang and Hazel Levasque are the OTPest OTP that I've ever seen. Oh my gosh. Frank. He's perfect. And Hazel is perfect for him. (They are from the Heroes of Olympus series by the way, if anyone didn't know.) I ship them like Fedex.
(May 8, 2016 - 8:57 pm)
Oh. Also Frog and Toad. From the Frog and Toad books. They have an awesome friendship.
(May 8, 2016 - 9:00 pm)
OMG, Bluebird, not only do you lie Twenty One Pilots, you also know the Frog and Toad books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHH! I love those! They're my favorite children's books^_^
Also, here are a few of my favorite ships/friendships:
Rose and the Doctor, Doctor Who, as friends and as a ship. Oh, my god. Oh. My. Lord. In. Heaven. They are just… GYEAAAAAHH! Yeah, there's no point trying to explain my feelings you.
Percibeth, HoO. EEEEEE! Annabeth rules! So does Percy, but together they're just fifty times better.
River Song and the Doctor, Doctor Who. Awesome friends!!!! She's the first person he gives his Sonic and tells his name!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jason and Piper, HoO. Must I say more?
Martha Jones (sorry more DW) and Donna Noble—when they gang up on the Doctor. Heehee. “He's so thin—you get paper cuts hugging him!”
There's more to come, I just can remember right now.
(May 10, 2016 - 1:18 pm)
Bluebird, you are so right! Also, Percabeth, Jasper(I think that's what Jason/Piper is called), and um.... Oh! It's Caleo. Also Cedri, which, if you haven't read the Redone Harry Potter RP that is going on right now in the Inkwell, isn't gonna make sense, but it's Cedric and Henri(Her full name is Henrietta)
(May 10, 2016 - 11:01 am)
@Bluebird- YES YES FRAZEL
And I have a lot of ships... lets see:
Connie and Mitch from Adventures In Odyssey (seriously OTP)
Frazel, as I said above
Jason and Piper from HoO
Calypso and Leo from HoO
Sherlock and Molly from the new BBC Sherlock
Holly and Artemis from Artemis Fowl
Sam and Six from the Lorien Legacies (I ship this almost as much as Connie and Mitch)
Alex and Sabina from Alex Rider
And that's all for my romantic ships, BUT
I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of Jason and Nico from HoO becoming best friends. I can really see Jason acting as Nico's big brother and just love Jason so much.
I also need me some platonic Solangelo.
And that is all. I ship way too many things. I'm sorry. ;P
Misty says choi. Choice? What kind of choice?
(May 16, 2016 - 8:53 am)
OMGEEEE SOLANGELO! I ship that too. Nico is such a cutie. (:
(May 22, 2016 - 11:01 am)
Weeeeeell, I don't actually ship Solangelo in a romantic way, I just NEED Will and Nico to be BFFs. I can totally see them acting like brothers. As a romantic couple, I hate it, but platonically they're awesome.
But YES, Nico is adorable. I love Nico.

I know what a foil is, Bibliophile, don't worry! This thread wasn't for foils specifically, but mainly just for duos in books with interesting or memorable dynamics.
Since even going on this site counts as 'revisiting middle school' for me, I'll go ahead and say Kendra and Seth from Fablehaven.
(May 18, 2016 - 7:05 pm)
I'll give it a try! I tend to adore love-hate relationships so... Yeah. Oooh! And love triangles!
Darcy and Lizzie: Pride and Predjudice. I love their relationship. The whole hate and love mix... Just, wow. Thanks, Jane Austen.
Anne and Gilbert: Anne of Green Gables. Another perfect love-hate. I kind of sat through half the book thinking, "Anne, quit hating Gilbert already, you're so over-reacting!" But at the same time... Isn't it perfect?
Mathew and Anne: Anne of Green Gables. They had the perfect mentor-relationship, the perfect friendship. The ending... Let's just say I cried.
Jo and Laurie: Little Women. WHY Luisa May Alcott, why? We were all counting on you! How dare you do that to your readers?! Still, though, even with that problem, I think their feelings for each other are captivating. In a different sorts of love way.
Betsy and Tacy: Betsy-Tacy. Soooo sweet! I loved them!
Jurors 3 and 8: Twelve Angry Men. They have a very interesting dynamic that keeps the play moving, in my opinion.
Elinor and Marianne: Sense and Sensibility. They have an incredibly deep sister relationship that the book would not be the same without. I think that was part of what made the book so meaningful for me.
As for Shakespeare... I think Luciana and Antiphulus are a priceless couple. I love that whole play, what with the confusion and... Love triangles. But those two melt my heart.
Thanks for making this thread!

I LOVE Anne of Green Gables! And Anne and Gilbert are PERFECT! Both together and sepereate! And it was so sad when Matthew... at the end... I cried too.
Anyways...
Caleo- I think that's what it's called. Well, it's just perfect!
Mary and Colin- The Secret Garden. They're just so similar! They were both spoiled for just about their whole lives, they both have a bad temper... and so much more!
Tom and Becky: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I think it's really sweet how much Tom has a crush on Becky, and the part in the cave... well, it was a little bit romantic.
Puck and Sabrina- The Sisters Grimm series. Has anyone read this? Well, I really like it. I think they have a perfect love-hate relationship. First playing all kinds of tricks on one another, then... what happens at the end?
Prim and Katniss: The Hunger Games. Katniss is so protective of Prim, and she just loved her so much. They're a perfect pair of sisters, and they love each other so much! It was so sad when Prim... you know.
Anne and Gilbert: Anne of Green Gables series. Like I said at the beginning, their just perfect together. The perfect love-hate relationship... I just have to bring it up again.
Anne and Diana: Anne of Green Gables series. They were just the best 'bosom' friends ever! I don't think they ever had a really bad fight, and they were together to the very end. Well, that's what I call friendship!
I'll probably think of more later...
