Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Magnus Chase Books!!!
Ok does anybuggy...

Ok does anybuggy else LOVE this book as much as I do?  It's really good and I've already read it even though I got it like two days ago.  I really missed the funny chapter names all through Heros of Olympus.  I can't wait for more, especially since Annabeth and Magnus explain about their parents to each other at the end!!!!

I'm not allowed to read this series. And yet I'm allowed to read Percy Jackson, and the Kane chronicles.

EEEEE! I love this book!

My sister hates Percy Jackson (I've been trying to get her  to try it again, because she ony read the first book, but it isn't working.) But anyways, she helped me pay for the book at the bookstore, because I'd been waiting FOREVER and literally couldn't wait any longer. She gets really annoyed that I read Rick Riordan so dang much (I have read the Lost Hero and The Lightning Theif a billion times because they were the only two I own) and now she's getting SUPER irritated that I'm reading Magnus a bunch now!

Also, Hearth, new fictional crush. He's amazing.

Anybody have any ideas how to get my sister to read Riordan again, because almost NOBODY I know reads Riordan, and I'm dying to talk about it.

Whaaaaat?

Nobody you know reads Riordan? At my school, when the Blood of Olympus came out, every single person in my grade (including me!) came to class with a brand new copy!

I'm homeschooled, so not as many of my friends are allowed to read it.

PLease give me advice! I need to get my sister to read it! I've started talking to the characters!

(Please, please, please don't judge, I really need to discuss it.)

What's really funny is that one chapter that's called

"Hearthstone Passes Out More Times Than Jason Grace (Even Though I Have No Idea Who That Is)"

AAAAAAAWWWWWWEEEEEESSSSSSOOOOOMMMMEEEE!!!!!

I seriously hope that the rumors I've heard, about Magnus Chase being the link between series, is true. I'm taking that as a good sign.

TARDIS, I dunno what you've heard, but Magnus is Annabeth's cousin and at one point she tries to get him to Camp(Which would be interesting since he's dead).  Also, Annabeth will be an important part of the plot as somepoint in the next books(At least according to Frey).

SPOILER ALERT

I can't believe he died on page like 48!  Still, the chapter "I Did Not Ask For Biceps" is pretty funny.

It's a cool, easy read, but frankly, I'm not as crazy about this one as I thought I would be. Riordan has diminished in my sight recently, and reading this book . . . Magnus sounds just like a Percy with a different Father. Really, the tone is the same, and the basic plot (quest with a few friends) is getting a bit dull. But I love Norse, so I'm liking this book a bit. I like how he tried to add diverse characters in his story, and I loved Annabeth's appearances, though short. But still, the voice and characters are too similar.

I am looking forward to the new series - the one about what happens to Apollo after HoO. Anyone else heard about it?

Magnus Chase is really cool, and I love it, but I think Riordan really needs to make a book with a girl protagonist. In the Kane Chronicles Sadie and Carter share the story, but thats not the same as a solo female protagonist.

I loved it but it was strange to have a dead main character, but i still LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

I am a huge PJO and HOO and Kane Chronicles fan. Somehow, though, Sword of Summer didn't really... get me that way.

Making Magnus a son of Frey instead of Thor or Loki was good... I just feel that it didn't make a difference. Magnus was still super-powerful in a stereotypical way.

Somehow I'm not happy with Riordan's way of writing PoC (people of color) characters. As someone who's both Catholic and Asian any kind of writing about minorities and/or mentions of religion really touch me. I didn't like the way Samirah's name was abbreviated to Sam: Riordan I think is popular enough without having to please mainstream audiences and he didn't need to abbreviate it. Samirah is a great character without having to be called Sam! Her headscarf didn't have to be a cloak of invisibility: she could have just been a female character who happens to be Muslim and that's okay. Race and religion don't have to be a plot device: maybe he could just throw in a PoC character who is a complex normal person.

Honestly I love his books and writing style and I see why he's popular. I just think he should use his popularity to make more complex characters without having to worry about audience.
