It's McGonagall. And about her being headmistress, aw well. I liked McGonagall, but JKR's word goes. Maybe one of the good teachers around when Harry was there became headmaster/mistress. Flitwick, maybe?

I sat, curled up in a little ball on a common-room couch, and bit my nails, eyes glazed over, as the clock ticked and ticked and ticked, hypnotizing me. Everyone else had gone to bed long ago, but I refused to move until Lillian came back, not having any idea what had happened, and why she was gone.

I heard the shuffling gait of someone trying not to wake up other people. Jumping up, I whispered, "Lillian? That you?"

Instead, Albus's shadow fell across me. "I'm going out. Finding her. You with me?"

I thought of all the possible consequences, leaning towards safety, then pictured Lillian's face at the sight of bread.

We crept out.

*******

((Does this work with everybody? Is this realistic of Albus at all? Just trying to add more.))

I would think at least that TNO the HP genius (umlaut!) would realize this but apparently not... do we not all recall in 7 when Voldy put the Sorting Hat on Neville's head and set it afire, saying something morbid to the tone of, "From now on there will be no Sorting at Hogwarts--the only House shall be that of my noble ancestor Salazar Slytherin"??!! Where did this new Hat come from??!! *rants*

Flitwick's far too ancient... Kingsley was elected interim Minister at the end of 7, what about him? He couldn't be too old, and I liked him. Minus the earring.

Albus was still in the Great Hall. He was sobbing his heart out, feeling misery beyond description. Hufflepuff! he thought. Hufflepuff! James' voice, the words so familiar, floated back to him... "Yeah, the Slytherins are a bunch of Death Eaters' kids, they're losers, and Ravenclaws are all stuck-up and head-in-the-clouds, sort of like they think the rest of us are subhumans or something, and the Hufflepuffs are a bunch of dopes with fluff in their brains... Gryffindor's the only House to be in, Al. Don't and we'll disown you, but that's okay, I don't think we're related anyhow--I mean, guy like me with a brother like you? Yeah, reckon not." James had said that so many times, and now he felt like he'd let down not only his older brother, James, his idol, but also his dad... what would Dad say? Oh, heck, heck, heck, what would Dad say?

All those speeches about being proud, whatever House you were in, all those kind, "Well, it doesn't matter as long as what's inside is good," all those, "The Sorting Hat lets you cho"- WAIT!

WAIT, thought Albus to himself. WAIT. WAIT. Dad said that the Sorting Hat takes your choice into--and WAIT, WAIT, WAIT. WAIT. Didn't Neville always tell that story about how Lord Voldemort, all those years ago, burnt the Sorting Hat on top of Neville's head when defied? How could no one have made the connection? What on Earth was being used as the Sorting Hat? Where was the song it was supposed to sing, and didn't Mum say it whispered in your head or something? And most of all... Maybe this means that I'm not supposed to be in Hufflepuff.

Albus stood up, heart racing, and ran to where he thought the Headmaster's office might be.

Unfortunately, his pell-mell scurry carried him right to the kitchens, where Slytherins were terrorizing a second year.

((Presumably it was magically stitched up and continued to function properly after Voldy was killed. Harry and James 'n' everyone wouldn't have brought up the Sorting Hat if it had been destroyed, after all. Also, (not to be mean, but) the story has already gone off in a different direction, see above posts?

Hum, Kingsley as headmaster. The idea has potential, shall we put it to a vote?))

He always seemed to be more of a political guy if you ask me; somehow I can't see him in Dumbledore's study...but I can't think of anyone else. Okay, I vote for Kingsley. If Lupin was still around, he'd be cool, but he's not. :(

((Before I said that Albus and I went searching for Lillian. Whatever, we're out, so you can think of this however you'd like.))

All right, ignore my post, I guess I just felt sad for Albus. :( Would he REALLY be put in Hufflepuff? Is there ANY way around that? *pats Albus on back*

Yeah, no more Lupin. Lupin I could tolerate dying, I guess, but Tonks was tragic... of course, you knew it would happen as soon as Lupin made Harry godfather, so that Harry could become sort of like a second Sirius. Didn't soften the blow, of course, but all the same.

Still, though, worst death was definitely Fred. So sad. :`( Poor George!

Sorry...Hufflepuff is my fault... we didn't know you were playing him and so I just decided to sort him. I can change it if you want.

Sally started up the stairs, careful to look for any disappearing steps or shifting staircases. She was sleepy and her belly was full. Lisa and Mike plundered on behind her, yawning and exclaiming at the hour. They passed a a large tapestry and Sally thought she heard voices behind it, but then remembered how tired she was. Maybe she was already dreaming.

Once they got past the fat lady and inside the warm Gryfindor common room, Sally's eyes were nearly closed. She couldn't remember a thing. Not Albus's surprising house, nor the disagreeable Malfoy boy. All she could think of was that nice fluffy pillow and those nice warm sheets. She smiled sleepily, only half hearing the excited girl at her side, telling her that there were three students out and about. She recalled this halfway through the night, and even then dismissed it absentmindedly. She would hear about it in the morning...
