Well, I don't

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Books/Songs Synesthesia
Well, I don't...

Well, I don't know if it's precisely synesthesia, but I often get this thing where I'll listen to a particular song over and over again (being really into it) during the time I'm reading a book, and so whenever I listen to that song again later, the book always comes to mind. It doesn't have to have any relation in subject matter, but it just works like that.

The strange pairings are--

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle and "It Will Rain" by Bruno Mars.

The Hero and the Crown by Robin Mckinley and "My Life Would Suck Without You" by Kelly Clarkson.

The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman and "Your Biggest Mistake" by Ellie Goulding.

Does this ever happen with any of you?

That happens to me all the time! I can't think of any examples at at the moment, but I'll try. It's not always with books and songs for me, though, for example, I sometimes associate a song with a place or a memory.

For me, the song "Smile" by R5 is associated with Percy Jackson. This is because it sounds like the guy says " goat" at one time, and this was when I had just read about what Grover was. Also, a lot of songs are associated with the places I was in Minecraft when U heard it.

It's not so much as songs for me, but places and happenings. I think it's like Mo, in Inkheart, says;
“If you take a book with you on a journey, an odd thing happens: The book begins
collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that
book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind
with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it
smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it... yes,
books are like flypaper—memories cling to the printed page better than
anything else.”

I think some memories are only little motions I did when I read the book for the first time. Others are where I was, like the Wind in the Willows will remind me of shopping for a ballet outfit for my sisters at Academy, because I was trying to read it then. And Gathering Blue by Louis Lowery will remind me of being in the car and trying to read - because that's what I was trying to do when I read it.

@ True

That is also how I associate books, I was camping while I read The Wind in the Willows and I read Gathering Blue this summer at my grandparents house. The first Harry potter I spent a week of summer reading in my room when I was eight. The second I read in Florida (I distinctly remember beliving that Moaning Myrtle lived in the bathroom at the pool) the third Harry Potter I secretly read during class in fourth grade and so on so forth. I remember where and when I have read any book and perhaps I owe it to reading that I have a good memory.

Oh, yes! More often its just a chapter or a line from the book. Like with The Deathly Hallows, the last chapters, I associate Pompeii by Bastille.

And this is, like actually, a thing. Yeah, that sounds weird, but in some books (aka Divergent, The Selection etc) the author has thier playlist for the book.

I know, I've read of that; I do it myself. Really helps to get in the mood of the story day after day by putting the brain in writing-story-mode.

Yes on that! Sometimes when I'm stuck in my writing, I here a song and go "That's it. That's what my character's thinking" and I can work it from that song and onto the paper. Like, Every Tear is a waterfall" goes exactly with one of my stories.

Yes, all the time! I actually use this as a strategy to help me on tests at school. I chew a certain flavor of gum while I study, and then I chew the same flavor again when I take the test. For some reason it helps to jog my memory or something, and I remember what I studied. It really does help!

When I am reading....

Eldest near the end when MURTAGH and Eragon are fighting and when Tigerstar and Firestar are battling of the last hope, Come With Me Now by Kongo ais over and over in my head.

When I read of Snape's past it reminds me of Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. Dark past, I guess. Like; "I can't escape it now, unless you show me how" is Snape trying to forget about Lily and him having to kill Dumbledoor.

And when I read when Saphira hatches for some reason my mind starts to play Electric Youth.
