Chatterbox: Blab About Books
I just hate...
I just hate it when books or stories have weak heroines. You know, like when the pretty girl is in trouble, she waits for someone to save her, a handsome boy comes along and helps, blah, blah, blah. It drives me insane! I like strong heroines, not those Disney-ish princessy girls.

I'm sure guys feel this way too, when they're portrayed as weak in stories as well. I've seen a lot of that in books, actually. All genders can be "weak" in a book - some characters are just like that. The story wouldn't be interesting if everyone was strong. ;)

And thus one of the main reasons I started calling myself Blonde Heroines Rule.
Weak and/or pathetic female characters drive me freaking insane. I cannot stand them. There's a difference between making a character with weak points and downfalls, and characters who cannot do a blessed thing to save their dadgum souls! Female character are way too often poorly portrayed in this way!
Now then people jump to the other end of the scale, which also drives me nuts, and that's empowering the character too much. They make them stronger and better than anyone else, giving them unrealistic abilities, and make them unreliant upon anyone else.
I just like to have a female character who is not constantly dependent upon her male counterparts and can hold her own, but still has flaws and downfalls, and in fact needs the support and help of other characters.

Exactly! I've noticed that lots of the new books coming out like The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Selection, stuff like that, they all have heroines with strong personalities. In case you haven't noticed, lots of animated films don't have strong heroines.
Like one movie I watched was about these scientists who competed for some kind of evil title or something. Guess what? There was not one single girl scientist! All the girls wer girlfriends for the scientists who did absolutely nothing!
That's another thing that bugs me. People think that girls can't accomplish as much as boys. Once I was at this foot doctor with my mom. The nurse came and started getting my mom ready for the surgery. She could tell I was interested in medical stuff, so she said, "Are you going to be a nurse when you grow up?"
"No," I said, glaring at her. "I'm going to be a DOCTOR."
When girls are interested in medical fields, people assume she'll be a nurse! It drives me nuts! Why can't a girl be just as smart as a boy?!

I agree!
I really hate it when the princess is stuck in the tower and then the knight-in-shining-armor rescues her, but before they go she has to redo her layer of make-up. It's not fair that boys are usually the heros.
I also agree that people think girls can't acomplish as much as boys. I want to be an astrophisisist-engineer/astronaut when I grow up, and I only know 2 girl engineers and one girl astronaut (Sally Ride)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really love all the books where girls are the heroines, too.

I. ABSOLUTLY hate over-powered characters. Mostly in rps. I mean, making a over-powered character? What's the point? How can there be any problems?
And in rps, it makes it very unfair for the rest of the characters... I really want to make a example, but it's gonna hurt someone-who-I-won't-say's feelings... Oh, but you don't even know how badly I want to say.

BHR- i didnt have very much time, so i didnt read your whole post so you might have already mentioned this, but not just are females in books sometimes weak, but if they're blonde, its even worse. I'm a blond haired girl, and you DO NOT wanna mess w/ me. Why does hair color matter honestly people!!

Exactly! Where did the stereotype "dumb blond" even come from!?!? I mean not to compliment myself, since I am also blond, but most blond people I know are some of the smartest people I know!

A study said that, on average, men are less intelligent than women.
I calculated. On average, men are 12% less intelligent than women overall.

I believe it.

Totally believe that.

GIRL POWER IS SO UNDERESTIMATED!!!! I HAVE SO MUCH POWER AND SO DO OTHER GIRLS!

It's horrible and degrading to girls, if all the good MCs are always boys and never girls. Not true. Not true. But my favorite genre is YA superhero novels, and there's only one, THE GIRL WHO COULD FLY, that I can think of that stars a girl. Yeesh.
There's more I could say but I won't.
