The Golden Compass (Phillip Pullman)
Okay, I slightly...

Okay, I slightly shrieked with happiness when I read that Forrest is also a fan of the Golden Compass--so far only she and CaptainRead have read it, and where has the Captain gone? So I'm making this page for us (and any other closet Pullman fans) to discuss the book.

My opening remarks are as follows:

Lyra is one of the best heroines I have read in so long, because although she seems like a typical tomboyish heroine, Pullman never makes any ostentatious attempt to make her likeable. She lies, she's sneaky, she's loyal, she's snarky, she's human, despite the great different world she lives in, and you can't help liking her by the end.

I love the daemons. I wish I could see my daemon. I know I do have one hidden inside my head.

Pullman's characters are all so well drawn: Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are the coolest villains. Lee Scoresby is a Western cowboy with a balloon. Iorek Byrnison is a real northern-type hero but he is a freaking polar bear!

This book really got me into the "Idea of North" which is the second chapter title. Northern lights, polar bears, snow covered plains--I would love to see that in real life.

I've got to say that The Subtle Knife (henceforth SK) and the Amber Spyglass (hereafter AS) didn't impress me as much as Golden Compass (GC) did, mostly because of Will Parry. But that's the topic of another, much longer, conversation. :)

I tried reading it a few days ago but I am only 11 and it was hard to understand.

I own the movie. I was really mad at the ending. I'm going to need to read the series!

I never saw the movie. I would love to, though I don't exactly agree with the casting for Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter. For one thing, Mrs. Coulter is supposed to be all dark-haired, like Arwen or something, and Nicole Kidman is a snow-queen blond. And Daniel Craig looks too old.

But the thing I wondered was that since Lyra's got dirty-blond hair, does that mean that Lord Asriel's blond? Both parents can't be dark-haired. But he's described as panther-like, and I always pictured him as a cross between a younger Laurence Olivier (the upper-class grace) and Loki (the cool evility).

I also forgot to mention how much I love the witches and the gyptians! Part of the reason why the sequels were a little disappointing was that they didn't have such an important part. Serafina Pekkala is AWESOME.

Lyra is awsome! I really do love the fact that she lies and steals. I also like theitr version of the gypsies and the wars they would have.

I'm here! I just haven't had the time to comment much...

I love the Golden Compass, and Lyra is so awesome! And I wish I could see my daemon too! The Gyptians and Lee Scoresby and the witches are all such amazing characters! I did get a bit annoyed by the ending of that book though, because it seems that Roger is the original reason that Lyra's gone to all this trouble to go North and find out about Dust and everything, and then he goes and....well, I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read the book, but AAAGH! And the movie doesn't handle that part very well in my opinion, but I haven't seen it in a while so I might be remembering it slightly differently.

I didn't mind the other two books that much, mostly because Lee Scoresby and Iorek were awesome, and I loved the mulefa and what's-her-name's revelations about Dust. I did like Will Parry, though when he was first introduced it felt almost like Pullman was just trying to replace Roger...

Subtle Knife wasn't THAT bad when I reread it--at first I was a little like, okay, who is this new narrator, but Lyra's really strong voice was kept intact in the parts she did have to narrate. And Lee Scoresby's last "Alamo" stand was just too. Sad. For. Words. Pullman's death scenes are genius! Admittedly the idea of a "war on Heaven" dropped into the middle of Book 2 was a little bit startling, but not a huge deal was made of it then.

My main problem with Amber Spyglass is how A, Will becomes such a hero type while, B, Lyra no longer had much of a character except as Eve, meaning just becoming a dull romantic interest, C, Iorek lumbers in then lumbers out again in one chapter, D, the visit to the Underworld was a little too like Aragorn walking the Paths of the Dead for an unbeatable army, E, I wish Mary didn't have to call Christianity a "great mistake"--there was enough knocking of religion without having to expressly say it. The only thing that I didn't mind too much was Asriel's and Mrs. Coulter's last struggle with Metatron, because it kind of redeemed them, despite after all of their past evil deeds.

Hello this is Lyra writing( Lyra is actually my name ). I love The Golden Compass. I wish I could see my dæmon. I think if I could mine would be a sparrow. I love Ioriek Byrnison the best of all the characters besides Lyra. Have you read Lyras Oxferd? I don't like SK or AS. I'm going to write a second comment later but right now I'm a little pressed for time so bye.
