Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Redwall
(Third try to...

(Third try to actually write this post without interruption.)

So, I know a lot of people talked about this series on the Chatterbox before, but I only got around now to reading it. I might say it makes my Top 10 list of favorite books--it's at least the most satisfying story I've read in a long time. But anyway, it was such a great story with awesome characters and setting.

What I liked best was how Mattias, though he is the great destined hero, is neither prissy, nor overly stupid, and has a charming sense of humor. Constance is such a fantastic fighter; I wanted to stand up and cheer every time she got the rats to back off. And the rats themselves were just--well, let's just say that Cluny the Scourge may be one of the best villains ever--so mad and evil--and leave it at that.

I'm on Mossflower now, and it isn't quite so exciting, because Tsarmina, besides having a very cool name, seems just like a female version of Cluny. Or maybe I just don't like cats to be villains. :) And since we all now Martin is going to end up the great legendary hero, it isn't quite as suspenseful. However, I do like Gonff, the mouse Robin Hood. He's the only reason why I'm going to finish it. I've also got Mattimeo on the pile, and liking the look of Slagar the Fox's harlequin mask.

I have read all the Redwall books that I've been able to get my hands on except for Mattimeo, which I'm about halfway through right now.

I liked Gonff a lot, and I can't remember whether he appears in any of the books other than Mossflower... What I like about the Redwall series is that they're all set in the same (sort of) land, but there are new characters all the time with new adventures. I also love the riddles and how some minor characters are there in the background connecting the books chronologically!

Redwall just never appealed to me. I thought it was rather boring.

But I haven't given them a try in a long while. Maybe I'll like them more now that I'm older.

Just finished Mossflower. It got better at the end, but mostly because of the hares.

I'm in the middle of Mattimeo, and I think it's the best of the "original" trilogy, mostly because it's so different, in terms of villainy, so funny, in terms of Basil Stag Hare, and so sad, in terms of Friar Hugo *wipes away a tear*. I was honestly flummoxed by the return of Chickenhound. Plus, it's kind of fun to get the second generation thing, and I like how it feels like less of a quest epic and more...I don't know...real?

Can anyone tell me if Sunflash the Mace figures in another book without giving away too much? I was so surprised that he was still alive at the end of Mossflower, and I hoped Bella reunites with her son again.
