Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Septimus Heap Series
I just finished...

I just finished the last book, Fyre, and thought I'd create a thread on it.

Some people can justifiably say that it's very similar to both Harry Potter (wizards, British humor, seven books in the series) and Lord of the Rings (rings and Dark Lords), but that would be ignoring a lot of the great inventiveness of Angie Sage's tale. Her characters are humorous and original, and her plots, while winding, are really engaging, and there's a lot of little touches that make the books really unique (this is sounding like a formal, back cover review!)

My favorite books, in order, are: Flyte, Magyk, Fyre, Darke, Physik, Queste, and Syren, though I haven't read the early ones in a while. My favorite characters are Marcia (of course), Jenna, Septimus, Beetle and Stanley the Message Rat (who sadly faded out of the story too soon!).

It's definitely a wonderful series, and if you like magic and humor and suspense, it's a really entertaining series to read!

I was reading those and really need to read the rest! But I stopped because the ones we had at our branch of libraries was limited and I was too lazy to request them. And my dad stopped driving us to library and those books are huge and a pain to carry a mile home.

But anyway, I loved what I read of them!

I read the first book, and then, a year later, the first again, and the second and the third. Now, I really should read them all over again, and then the fourth and so on. But those are just some of the books that make my head hurt because they are so thick! But they are so good, I can't put them down. I've noticed this feeling for a lot of fantasy books of great thickness, and I think that's why I stopped reading them for a while.

@ True:

The books are pretty hefty! I think, though, if they were bound "normally" and not so aggressively square, they would be much shorter. At least, the time it takes me to read them is equal to how long it takes to read a 300/400 page book, not a 700 page one. You should really finish the series, though, it's so fun!

The first few books were so interesting, I do want to! But I still have to get my hands on the first book, to refresh my memory, and it's always checked out at my library!

By the way, what do you mean by "normally" bound?

You know, sort of rectangular--so that the length is about twice as long as the width.

I have no problem with the actual "binding" though--I love how every cover is made to look like an important book in the story, like Septimus's diary in Magyk and Jenna's Princess Rules in Fyre. And Mark Zug is such a good illustrator; I love his drawings of Marcia!

Oh, okay. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Yeah, the covers are so amazing! They are so well drawn! And, yes, the art is great, and, for once, I actually like how they've drawn the characters. Usually, I find myself having a totally different image in my head.

Yes! I love this series! And the art! But I am now so obssesed with the name Jenna that the main character in my novel is called Jenna. But I really love these books!

I LOVE these series!!!!  My favorites are Queste and Darke. My characters are Marcia, Septimus (I didn't one of his pictures, though), Jenna (I liked her picture in Darke with the witch's cloak), Beetle, Marcellus. And those are in no particular order. I convinced my friend to read them and she got to being almost done with the second one. She couldn't finish it because she was busy that night and the next day was the end of school. She said she liked them, which surprised me because she dosen't ussually like the books I read. And I hope Septimus marries Rose!!!!

If I ever publish a novel, I'd want Mark Zug to illustrate them.

I love the sketches of Beetle, Marcellus, Marcia and Alther Mella the best. And Lucy Gringe in Fyre, with that smirk! I always picture Jenna a little prettier than how she's drawn, though, for some reason.

@ Katie M.:

This series actually made me like the name Jenna, too, which I always thought of as such a boring name before!
