Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Star Shard by Frederic Durbin
I wanted to...

I wanted to read this because I know it was first published in Cricket magazine and because F.D. is going to do ANOTHER serial with the Crowd Sorcery (great idea, by the way, I'll totally contribute!) but I've got to say I was a little disappointed. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm halfway through and I still haven't found much of a plot. The characters aren't that well drawn out and I have no clue what the use of the Curdlebree twins is except to get Cymbril to the Night Market, and what Loric's purpose is except that he's just something different on the Rake for Cymbril to air her runaway, teenaged fantasies on.

I'm considering stopping, but if it's worth reading, I'll keep going. I like the Strongarms as a people and the Thunder Rake as a setting, but I wish there was more a sense of where everything's going. If it was a 500-page long book I wouldn't complain about the pace, but I'm already halfway done and...nothing's happened yet.

Is it worth finishing, or should I forget about it?

P.S. I am reading the published book version, which might be less tight and interesting than the serial first published in the magazine.

I, also, own a copy of the published Star Shard, but I have not read more than the first chapter. I did find it a little slow, and a llittle less interesting than the editions in the magazine. Maybe because the plot was condensed to fit a magazine, and then suddenly had to be expanded to make a book.

I suggest reading it to say you've read it, but if you really don't want to, go back and read it in the magazine!
