Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Must-Reads
I am making...

I am making a list for my library and had a question: which books do you think children/teenagers MUST read while growing up? It doesn't matter which genre or if they're for younger or older kids.

Well, I don't know about MUST-reads, but these may be my favorite books of all time, unordered.

Because of Winn-Dixie/The Tale of Desperaux/The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane/Flora and Ulysses by Kate Dicamillo.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin

The Blue Sword/The Hero and the Crown/Pegasus by Robin McKinley

The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Anne of Green Gables and its sequels/The Emily Trilogy by L.M. Montgomery

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Watership Down by Richard Adams

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman (only the first book, NOT the sequels!)

Thanks, Everinne! Those are some really great books! I actually haven't read Earthsea, the books by Robin McKinley or The Golden Compass. I'll have to add those to my reading list.

My library doesn't have a huge English section so they asked me to make a list of books. I think I would add all the John Green books, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the Secret series.

@ Elizabeth:

Robin McKinley is my favorite author; I love all her books. I just finished reading the Earthsea series; the last book is really sad but it's all very original, captivating high fantasy. Regarding Phillip Pullman, The Golden Compass is a really really REALLY good fantasy story, and is something to be read over and over again, but with books like that you expect the sequels to be equally fascinating. I was honestly let down by The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, not only because of his sudden anti-religious theme, which wasn't at all apparent in Compass, but also because I felt he lost his grip on the characters and the magical world. The sequels aren't terrible; they're worth reading just to find out how the story ends; but they were just a little disappointing.
