Chatterbox: Blab About Books

I need your...

I need your help!  I've been in a bookclub for a couple of years, and I've always had trouble choosing a book.  It's getting close to my turn to choose again, so I need some ideas.  Some of the kids in it aren't the best readers in the world, so it can't be over 100 pages.  If it is, they just don't bother reading it at all.  Plus, some of the parents don't like wizards and witches, so it can't be anything to do with that.  I'd really like some suggestions.

PLEASE!!!!!!

How about Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. It's hard to find good books shorter that 100 pages. If you're up for something just a tad longer, try Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, by Betty MacDonald. The individual stories are short, so they won't lose interest in that.

Thank you, Emily.  I have one of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books at home and really like them!  That's a great idea.  I'll try the other one too.  I feel like I've read something by Roald Dahl.  I'll try to figure out what it was.  Thanks!!

Emily, I read (and would recommend) both of those books! They were both really good.

Wow, it has to be under 100 pages? That doesn't leave much room for choice!! Is sci-fi OK?

I like the books by Dick King-Smith. But that may not be your style. It's not like they're too young or anything, they're just short. They're mostly about animals.

Maybe you should join a different bookclub? This one sounds kinda restricting. Are you allowed to choose a book that's over 100 pages, or is that just what everyone does?

Thanks for the ideas of the books by Dick King-Smith.  I do like stories about animals.  I'm not going to join a different bookclub, because the kids are mostly my friends.  It is sort of a lousy club, because most of the kids don't like reading.  The books can be over 100 pages, but if they are, chances are likely that the kids won't read it.  I should tell them to subscribe to Cricket.  It would teach them to enjoy reading.  Ha!  I'll do that!  Yes!  Thanks!!

I'd recommend Perloo the Bold. It's over the page limit (like 200 pgs) but it is really good. It's about a bunny whose destiny is to save the kingdom. Oh it's by Avi. He is a brilliant writer and lots of kids like him. Poppy is also by Avi and my sister says it's good (it's shorter too). If neither of those work try Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. It is pretty short (around 100-ish pgs) and is about a Native American girl who must survive on her own on a small island off the coast of California. It's based on a true story! Hope this helped.

I looked up the books and they sound good.  200 pages is fine.  If it's as exciting as it sounds, the other kids will read it all.  I noticed that the author Avi has like a million books that look really good.  Thank you!!  Island of the Blue Dolphins is good, too!  Thanks!!!!!

Hey! Some of my favorite books are by Gordon Korman. He wrote 3 really good trilogys and they're only like 120 pages a book. They are Dive,Everest, and Island.Everest was my personal favorite. Sorry I couldn't say more about them but they are hard to discribe, and it's been a while since I read them.    :P

WOW! I never knew how hard it was to find some really good books that are under 200 pages long! Well, I did find some that I think are really good books. The Sign of the Beaver, (135 pages), is a REALLY good book that's by Elizabeth George Speare. It's about a 12-year-old boy named Matt whose father left him in charge of their new cabin in Maine while he goes off across the country to get the rest of his family. His father takes a much longer time getting back than expected, and he befriends a group of Indians. When his family doesn't come back, the Indians offer him to make a new life with them and join their tribe. Will Matt give up on his family and live with the Indians, or will he keep hoping his family will return and wait for them? It's a great book! Another great book is Sing Down the Moon (121 pages) by Scott O'Dell.  If you like the book Island of the Blue Dolphins, you'll like this book, too. It's about a 14-year-old Indian girl named Bright Morning. She and her friend get captured by the Spanish slave drivers and have to try and escape. It's a really cool book. I hope these books are helpful to you!:)

I just realized that I read Sing Down the Moon, too!  That was a really good book!  Are you homeschooled, because I am, and I read both of those books in the program.
