Because I am
Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Because I am sadly a fan of the dark, mysterious, depressingly good-looking Byronic hero, I also am (sadly) a fan of the old fashioned, Gothic novel. It's a fun kind of genre, even though you can't do much with it, because it's vaguely fairy tale-ish, with a castle, the ingenue who somehow escapes seeming stupid, the amoral anti-hero who somehow turns out attractive, and that element of dark creepiness that always pursues the poor heroine to unhappiness. Thus it is often a kind of morbid genre, but then, I like morbid. :)
So far, my acquaintance with this genre are mainly the books by the Brontë sisters, but I also read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which wasn't quite as good as the movie, but still a very enjoying read. I also just finished the novel Endless Night by Agatha Christie, which is one of her "detective" novels, though the way it's written is almost Gothic--if you're a fan of her books, read it. If you're not a fan of hers, read it anyway--it's insanely good. It is for teens and older, though.
If you have any other recommendations in this genre, do let me know. :)
