Chatterbox: Blab About Books

1984
Has anyone read...

Has anyone read 1984? I started reading it once (one chapter), but my parents think I should wait a couple years. Opinions appreciated!

My class read it this year, and it's quite a good book. I can understand why your parents wanted you to wait, though; it did have some adult stuff in it. I... don't think I can go into any detail here, though, and else-Internet descriptions are spoilery, so you're going to have to either start it and just stop if you don't want to continue or wait.

I can't really tell you whether you should wait, because I'm not you, and I don't know what you couldn't handle or would make you uncomfortable. I can tell you that, as someone who's read the book, I don't think your parents are necessarily being unreasonable--it's possible you'd be fine, but I understand where they're coming from. But I also realize I'm probably being too vague to help you, so... sorry.

Yeah, I know what you mean about "some adult stuff"(his weird thoughts about the girl with the sash in the begining clued me in that there was probably worse to come).  My mom read it when she was 16 or 17 and thinks it would be quite depressing and stressful for me now, but I'm sure the "adult stuff" wasn't lost on her either.  I'm reading Anna and the King and finished LOTR recently, so that's where my reading level is, but I understood the 1st chapter pretty well too. I think I will wait, after hearing the perspective of someone who's read it. Thanks!

I'm glad someone asked about this. I've been quite curious. My mom wants me to read it, and I've been wanting to anyway. I read Animal Farm, and while it wasn't fun to read at the time, I'm REALLY glad I did. I think that's a book everyone should read at some point. It's very enlightening and eye opening. But yeah, I think I'm going to try and read 1984 as soon as possible.

Anything bad in Animal Farm?

There's nothing "adult" exactly in Animal Farm, but it is a bit gory. Not a lot, but a bit. It's about how power corrupts, except it's, well, animals.

The animals drive the humans off the farm, then it becomes a power struggle between these two pigs (the pigs are considered the smartest animals on the farm). From there, it goes into how at first they have put down rules. Then the pigs violate the rules, and keep going, and keep going, making excuses for each thing they do.

*spoiler*

Some of the animals do die, in some gruesome ways. It goes into some detail. Not a lot, but some.

Basically, nothing "adult," just a little gory.

Over all, I think the book is incredibly written, and it relates to the world now, and the world throughout history. I REALLY recommend reading this. Maybe you could ask your parents, and their opinion, but I recommend it. It's very worthwhile, and it's not a long book at all.

It can be creepy and/or sad; really bad stuff happens, and nothing is done about it. My class read it in 8th grade, though, when lots of us (including me) were 13, and we were all able to handle it.

It was, yeah, racy, there was torturing, and a lot of political stuff I didn't quite understand. too bad, b/c that was the point of the story... I'll just wait another few years.
