Watership Down is,...
Watership Down is, by far, my favorite book. I like books with animals in them, but they really must be carefully written or else the book is cheesy. I think this book is a masterpiece because of the way the rabbits are portrayed. I know it's an older book and rather obscure, but has anyone read it (and do you like it?)

Oh, my gosh, I love this book! I could possibly contend that it is my favorite book ever! I love how the rabbits are like humans, yet the story seems more effective because they're animals and not humans. I love Hazel, but I think Bigwig's my all time favorite character. My favorite part was when they orchestrated the theft of the females from the General's warren. See, that was one thing that would have been totally weird had the characters been humans, but since they're rabbits and natural instinct is more condoned, it was totally normal.
The film they made of it wasn't bad either, but it made the rabbits almost too Peter Rabbit-like: whimsical and charming instead of heroic and like warriors like how they're portrayed in the book.

In my experience there are two different movies of this great book, and neither of them are totally satisfactory. One, which I unfortunately watched before having read the book, and so am quite biased towards it, has nice animation and the characters are done pretty well, but it doesn't follow the book completely. The other, which I saw after watching the first AND reading the book, follows the book pretty much exactly, but the animation is really, in my mind, ugly, and it's really hard to tell which characters are which.
As always, the book is best. Has anyone read Tales from Watership Down, the compilation of other stories about the rabbits' folklore and stuff? It's reallly good.
I love the lapine words and names.

I did read the short stories! I thought they were really good. I especially liked all the included stories about El-ahrairah. It's so awesome how he included a rabbit hero in with his main story! And I love the names! Especially El-ahrairah. Looks very unpronouncable, but intresting nonetheless. And the names of the female rabbits are pretty.

I read part of it... whoa I never finished it because I was reading other books o.O I need to reread it. But I did like it where I got up to!

I read it and loved it. I don't remember it much now, but I remember their feeling it gave me and how I cried. :)

Is it really violent or graphic? Cause my mom saw the cartoon, and I saw like, two minutes and I nearly threw up.

No, not at all. The cartoon was waaay creepier than the book, for sure. I didn't like it nearly as much as the book--you should totally read it. I think you would like it. :)

Okay, good! Cause there's actually a chance I'll have to read it for school, and my mom was like, "Oh gosh, I saw that as a cartoon as a kid." And she goes and looks it up, and there's a video that was solely the violence of the show, and I nearly vomitted. So it's really really good to know it isn't violent like that! I will definitely be more open to reading it now.

I was a little shocked myself at the violence in some parts of the cartoon. I saw it right after I read the book (I was eleven, I think) and after the first scene when one of the rabbits prophesies the destruction of the warren, I just shut off the TV. I finished it two years later, I think, but it wasn't that great a representation of the book.
Well, there is a little implied violence (there's a couple of rabbit battles), but it's all just written and not too graphic. I don't think you should worry. :)
