January Book Club: The Princess and the Goblin
The Princess and...

The Princess and the Goblin book club is here! I will have book clubs every month, and this is my January book club. Here are some things you should know about this book club.

1. Please do not post here if you are not a book club member. The only people who can post on here are Gollum, S.E, and me (Nina). It will help keep us from being off topic and the book club will run smoothly.

2. Assignments will be posted below each Sunday. Every weekly assignment will be posted below. Assignments consist of chapter readings and just a few questions.

3. Book club chats will be held once in a while. They will usually be about the characters, settings, or conflict/important happenings in the book. I will post a note if there will be a book club chat coming soon. Book club members are encouraged to participate!

That's all! I hope you all have a great time reading The Princess and the Goblin. It is such a great book and I know you will enjoy it. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask! Happy reading!

Assignment #1

Assignment is due next Tuesday, January 7th, 2014.

For your first assignment, please read Chapters 1-10 of The Princess and the Goblin. It may seem like a lot, but it is only 79 pages and I know you can do it. If it seems like a lot, I suggest breaking the chapters up and read a little each day. After reading, please answer the following questions.

1. How does the author describe Irene's eyes?

2. What did Irene find at the top of the staircase? What did she find her doing?

3. What did Irene's nurse, Lootie, think when Irene told her about what she found at the top of the staircase?

4. Why did Irene promise Curdie a kiss when she got home?

5. When Curdie spied on the goblin family (Glump, Helfer, and Podge), what were they speaking about?

Hey, Nina,

I know I'm not allowed to post here, and obviously what I'm saying is way too late, but I'm so sorry that I couldn't do the What Katy Did book club. I could never find the book! Anyway, I'm sorry for taking a spot in the club for nothing. I didn't plan it that way.

Good luck to your new club!! Happy reading :)

Thank you for letting me know, Nora! I was wondering why I didn't hear from you. I also have noticed that you haven't posting here lately on the Chatterbox. Welcome back!

I can only answer up to 4:

1. He described them like a little piece of sky, with a star in the middle.

2. Irene found her great-great grandmother at the top of the staircase. She found her spinning with a spinning wheel? I think and I know there was a long thing about the difference between a spindle and a wheel...

3. Lootie thought she had imagined it.

4. Curdie helped them get back to the castle and away from the goblins.

5. Late, I must go!

Your third (and last) assignment is to read Chapters 22-32 of The Princess and the Goblin. Then, please answer the following questions.

2. Did you feel any sympathy for the goblins, in the end or even during the book?

3. Why was Curdie annoyed with Irene when she was telling him about her grandmother?
