An extremely random set of comments based on the first chapter "Lucy Looks into a Wardrobe":
The beginning of this book reminds me strongly of The Secret Garden. The house does, at least.
In the Hero's Journey, (we're doing a unit on that in English. So I shall make my English teacher happy by pointing out all the lovely bits of the monomyth.) Lucy's call is finding the wardrobe and wanting to explore it. The Threshold is the wardrobe in the normal world and the pine forest in Narnia.
Never noticed before, but this book is set in WWII. I imagine this might be important later.
The Faun is wearing nothing more than his furry legs and a red scarf. No shirt. And it's winter. There's snow. How the heck is he not freezing?
They said hoofs! They said hoofs! Cricket magazine isn't the only place that uses hoofs! "... and instead of feet he had goat's hoofs." (Lewis 6) I take my hat off to whoever decided that was a word.
*spoiler* Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the White Queen makes winter eternal in Narnia, doesn't she stop Father Christmas from coming? So I take that mean there's no Christmas. Yet it says "What with the parcels and the snow it looked just as if he has been doing his Christmas shopping." (Lewis 6) Then again, it just says it looked as if. So he may not have been. Never mind. *end spoiler*

Hm , you have a good point . Maybe he did come . In the movie he did xD Yet again , the movie isn't very closely tied to the books .
And about the WWII , really ? You never noticed that ? And yea , it is .
My opinions :
The WWII timeframe is important to me because it is the reason they had to leave . And if they never had to leave , then there would be no Professor's house . No professor's house means no wardrobe . No wardrobe means no NARNIA . Very important .
I love how delicatly written the description of the faun and Narnia is .
Love this book .

The last time I read this was when I was eleven or something. Back then I didn't know WW II as well as I do now. I was thinking something more along the lines of a character or social situation represents an English viewpoint of World War II, but, of course, without the war, one certainly wouldn't have the Narnia adventure whatsoever.

I've never read The Secret Garden, just watched the movie (I know, I know, i'm probably missing out on the best classic ever) but I really see them as different stories. The only real similarity I see is the time setting. But maybe the authors have a similar style.
Yeah, I worried about dear Mr. Tumnus at first too. But then I have to remember: he's a faun in the magical land of Narnia. Who knows whether or not it matters that he's not wearing a shirt? Maybe Fauns have, like, superhigh body temperatures.
*spoiler* Well, yes, the White Queen's spell is supposed to keep Father Christmas from coming. I think the line you are referring to was just saying as if, so not really him, but *SERIOUS SPOILER UNLESS YOU HAVE READ LIKE HALF THE BOOK STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T* he does visit the four children eventually, which, since that is against th White Queen's spell, so that's why it's a sign that her spell is weakening.

I love these books! After The Lord of the Rings, it's my favorite epic fantasy series (RR's stories aren't exactly epic fantasy, just fantasy). My favorite books in order are:
The Magician's Nephew (you gotta love prequels)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader/Prince Caspian (these two always seemed like one story to me)
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle
The Horse and His Boy (there's nothing wrong with Cor and Aravis--and I love their names!--but it seems a little out of place in the rest of the series).

You're right about The Horse and His Boy thing !
Has anyone else read the chapter ? There were a lot of people on the other thread ..

I'll be doing it, but I can't post my opinion until tomorrow because I still don't have the book. I'll be going to the library tomorrow.
