Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Best School Readers!
So in celebration/whateve...

So in celebration/whatever/something of school starting, what are the best books/stories you've ever read for school? What grade were you in and if it was historical fiction what time period were you studying? Tell all about it here!

My favorites are:

1. Mara, Daughter of the Nile (obviously, since I just made a thread about it)

Set in Ancient Egypt. I think I was in sixth grade or so.

2. The Sherwood Ring

New Hampshire, revolutionary war era. This book is SO AWESOME. Read it. I think I was in 6th or 7th grade.

3. The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Colonial Era, 5th grade. My mom read it out loud to us.

4. Follow My Leader

The 80's. 2nd grade. My mom read it to us.

5. My Side of the Mountain.

1950's or so, but it's irrellevant because it's a wilderness survival book. Second grade. My mom read it to us.

6. And then there were those silly Pathway Mennonite readers that I had through like 5th grade... well I read them through the 7th grade reader but I was always way ahead. :P They were quaint and strange, and always contained an Aesop about honesty or something. And the characters were really bland, but nostaligia can do wonders. Anyway. You?

I haven't read many novels for school, but my favorites are The Witch of Blackbird Pond and Johnny Tremain. If you haven't read Johnny Tremain, go to the library RIGHT NOW and get it.

Spammy says mmek, which I translate as 'meh' *gasps* You don't think Johnny Tremain is that good a book? THROW SPAMMY IN JAIL!!!!!!!!

Ehm...

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.  This year, as a sophomore in high school.  Amazing.  Sydney Carton is on my list on characters whom I will love forever, unconditionally.

I'm homeschooled so I read what I please. I read so much I can't remember but here's what I've read this past year:

Emma by Jane Austen. Painless and humorous. 18th Century England.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Did I mention how much I love this book?! It was set in the above time.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Read one line and you can tell he's just NOT from this century!

Other goods books I've been reading...

The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage. Like Harry Potter but not as epicly amazing.

Everything Rick Riordan, it seems. The end of the Kane Chronicles wasn't so bad, after all.

Great Expectations, huh? I'm reading that right now. I like it so far.  You're right, though, definitely not from this century. (I almost wonder what his writing would be like if he had been born in this one.)

In fifth grade we read The Wanderer and Heartbeat by Sharon Creech.  Those were really good.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli in fourth grade

Ninjas, Piranhas, and Galileo by Greg Leitich Smith for summer reading in sixth grade.

Tangerine by Edward Bloor in sixth grade

A Christmas Carol play version in seventh grade

Coffee House Angel by Suzanne Selfors for summer reading in eighth grade

So Far from the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins in eighth grade. She came to our school.  She's so nice!

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck for ninth grade summer reading.  This one I kind of half liked. It wasn't my most favorite.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was probably my favorite. I read it last year in 9th grade.

Over the years my mom has read tons of books aloud for school. I don't really remember the grades she read them for, but my favorites were Carry on Mr. Bowditch, Down Ryton Water,The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Sing in the Dark, Tidewater Valley, and Song of the Pines.

I love Flowers for Algernon! It's in our English textbook this year. When I was little I used to take her textbooks and read them. So when I opened the book up this year I said, 'Whoah! Flowers for Algernon! I forgot all about it! I love this story!"
