Hattie Big Sky
by Kirby LarsonWhen 16 year old Hattie Inez brooks receives a letter from her uncle saying that she has inherited 320 acres of property in Montana, she jumps at the chance to improve the homestead claim. The year is 1917, and times are hard. Hattie is eager to be off on her own.
During the book she learns about hard work, friendship and how NOT to get swatted in the face when you're milking a cow! This is one of the best books I've ever read and it deserves at least TEN chirps. It won the Newberry award and is a combination of letters, newspaper cuttings and recipies.
You should absolutely read this book. On second thought, read it three or four times!

I saw this recommendation and checked it out, and it is certainly five chirps! I really enjoyed how honest the book was, how the author didn't make it a happy-dappy-all-problems-solved-by-the-next-day sort of book. I did cry at the end, though (in a good way). I would definitely recommend this to my friends and other readers out there.
