Skyriders

by Polly Holyoke

This is a captivating and adventurous fantasy book about a girl named Kiesandra, who like everyone else in the fantasy world, can communicate with her winged horse through thoughts, N'Rah, otherwise known as a skysteed. Monsters known as chimerae are attacking the empire, and no one knows how to fight them exxcept Kie's uncle, and herself. When her uncle is injured, he makes her promise to tell the capital how to fight these chimerae.

I read part/all of one of the chapters, and I didn't like it. Apparently, it's recommended for 8-12 year olds, but I don't think it's even great reading for teenagers, and it really doesn't feel right for 8-year-olds to be reading in gory detail about how a twelve year old is unfeelingly killing horrible monsters. I'm a huge fan of Tolkien and Narnia, and I'm fine with the concept of good fighting evil and monsters having to be overcome (especially for ages of about nine up) but I feel like this book is a bit too focused on violence and gore.
