The story takes place during the 1800's in Oklahoma about a boy named Jay Berry who is about 13 years old, his dog, his crippled sister Daisy and his Pa and Ma.

Jay discovered monkeys that had escaped from a train wreck in the Ozarks.  There is a reward offered for the recovery of the monkeys.  The large monkey is worth $100 and the little monkeys are worth a $2 reward.

The story is about Jay Berry catching the monkeys and helping his sister with her crippled leg instead of getting what he wants with the money.

In the end, Jay gets what he REALLY WANTS!
