Play to the Angel

by Maurine F. Dahlberg

Play to the Angel is a novel by Maurine F. Dahlberg about a young girl named Gretta living in Austria in 1938, right before the Nazis take over her homeland. She, however, takes no notice of the turmoil outside and is instead focused on her one escape from her mother's headaches: playing the piano. After her older brother Kurt, a promising concert pianist, died, Gretta finds her mother irritative and unwilling to help her follow in her brother's footsteps.

Soon, she meets Herr Hummel, a kind pianist who is willing to give her lessons -- for free. He ends up being my favourite character because he is willing to listen and always can lend a hand to help. He is the only one who believes in her at some points.

As Nazi Germany begins to take over Vienna, Austria, Gretta uncovers new secrets and difficult situations. Read it to find out what happens!

I would recommend this book because it is written so well and the characters and places in Vienna come to life; you can feel as if you are there with them. It is a great read!
