Just Ella
by Margaret Pederson HaddixHeard of the original Cinderella story? The fairy godmother, glass slipper, and Prince Charming? Well, Ella has her own version. She has to sit in the castle, study royal genealogy, needlepoint, and manners. She has to live with a prince she doesn't even think is charming anymore. Fine, she loved him at the ball, but now, when she's crushing on another boy in the palace, she can hardly endure the meetings with the prince under a chaperon's watching. Soon, she has to embark on an adventure which requires courage and spunkiness--and no ladylike behavior allowed.

I enjoy fairy tale retellings, but only if they're done well - and this one certainly was. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fantasy/fiction story about a real girl, not an airheaded princess who falls in love with the handsome prince.
